1 Cent United States (Lincoln Memorial, Issued 1974)

The Lincoln cent with the Lincoln Memorial reverse was struck from 1959, marking the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, and remained the everyday one-cent coin for decades. This bronze-era piece has a warm copper-brown colour, a light but solid feel and a plain, unmilled edge. It circulated in enormous quantities as the smallest unit of United States money.

On the obverse appears Victor David Brenner’s right-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” arches across the top, “LIBERTY” is placed to the left of the portrait and the year “1974” to the right, all within a raised rim.

On the reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, is the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, shown frontally with its rows of columns. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves across the top with the motto “E·PLURIBUS·UNUM” below it, and “ONE CENT” is inscribed along the bottom of the coin.
