About Ugandan Shilling Exchange

The Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is the official currency of Uganda, issued by the Bank of Uganda. We accept all denominations of Ugandan Shilling banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Ugandan Shilling Banknotes

The current series of Ugandan Shilling banknotes features a range of denominations with security features including watermarks, security threads, and raised print. We accept all current banknotes across the full range of denominations — smaller everyday notes right up to the higher-value notes used for larger transactions. If you have returned from Uganda with leftover cash, we can exchange it all, whatever the mix of denominations.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we also accept older withdrawn Ugandan Shilling banknotes as well as notes that are torn, worn, or otherwise damaged. Provided a damaged note is at least 50% intact, we can usually exchange it. A slightly reduced rate applies to older and damaged notes, but it is far better than letting unused currency go to waste. If you are also sitting on leftover currency from other East African travels, we exchange Kenyan Shillings and Tanzanian Shillings too.

Ugandan Shilling Coins

We accept Ugandan Shilling coins, including the smaller denominations commonly encountered in everyday use across Uganda. Coins are accepted at a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to the additional handling costs involved — something most banks and bureau de change will not bother with at all. Send them alongside your banknotes and we will exchange the lot.

Ugandan Shilling Exchange FAQ

Do you accept Ugandan Shillings that I brought back from a safari trip?

Yes, absolutely. Leftover Ugandan Shillings from a holiday or safari are exactly what we deal with every day. Simply box up your banknotes and coins, post them to us, and we will verify the currency and pay you within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are not happy with the offer we make, we will return your currency to you free of charge.

Can I exchange old or withdrawn Ugandan Shilling banknotes?

Yes. We accept older withdrawn series of Ugandan Shilling banknotes that the Bank of Uganda has since demonetised. A slightly reduced rate applies compared to current notes, but we will still exchange them — something most UK banks and post offices will not do for an exotic currency like the Ugandan Shilling.

Do UK banks accept Ugandan Shillings?

No — most UK high street banks will not exchange Ugandan Shillings at all, as it is not a widely traded currency in the UK. That is where we can help: we accept current and withdrawn banknotes as well as coins, regardless of the denomination or series.

What condition do my Ugandan Shilling notes need to be in?

We accept notes in a wide range of conditions, including those that are creased, torn, or lightly stained. Our general rule is that a damaged note must be at least 50% intact for us to exchange it. Very badly mutilated notes may not be accepted, but if you are unsure whether yours qualify, feel free to contact us before sending.

Do you also exchange other East African currencies?

Yes! Alongside Ugandan Shillings, we exchange Kenyan Shillings and Tanzanian Shillings, so if you have returned with a mix of East African currency from your travels, we can handle them all in one go.
