About Turkish Old Lira Exchange
The Turkish Old Lira (TRL) was the official currency of Turkey before a redenomination in 2005 replaced it with the modern Turkish Lira. We accept all denominations of Turkish Old Lira banknotes and coins, including the extraordinarily high face-value notes that characterised the currency in its final years.
Turkish Old Lira Banknotes
Decades of high inflation in Turkey meant that Old Lira banknotes were issued in increasingly large denominations, with notes such as the 10,000,000 Old Lira and the 20,000,000 Old Lira becoming commonplace by the late 1990s and early 2000s. We accept all denominations across the range, including the lower-value notes that many UK travellers still have tucked away from older holidays to Turkey.
Old Series & Damaged Notes
All Turkish Old Lira banknotes are by definition withdrawn from circulation, having been demonetised when the new Turkish Lira was introduced in 2005. Unlike most high street exchanges, we still accept these notes regardless of their issue date, including earlier issues such as the 250,000 Old Lira issued in 1992 and the 500,000 Old Lira issued in 1993. Notes that are torn or worn are also considered, provided they remain at least 50% intact, though a slightly reduced rate may apply.
Turkish Old Lira Coins
Turkish Old Lira coins were issued in a range of denominations and, like the banknotes, have been out of circulation since 2005. We accept Old Lira coins, though as with most foreign coinage the exchange rate is slightly lower than for banknotes, reflecting the additional handling involved.
