About Tanzanian Shilling Exchange

The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the official currency of Tanzania, one of East Africa’s most visited destinations, renowned for the Serengeti, Zanzibar, and Mount Kilimanjaro. We accept all denominations of Tanzanian Shilling banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Tanzanian Shilling Banknotes

The Bank of Tanzania issues a range of banknotes featuring wildlife and national landmarks that reflect the country’s natural heritage. We accept all current denominations, and unlike most high street exchanges, we don’t cherry-pick only the highest-value notes — whether you’ve come back with a handful of smaller notes or a mix of denominations, we’ll exchange the lot.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most currency exchanges, we also buy older withdrawn Tanzanian Shilling banknotes that are no longer in everyday circulation. Damaged notes are accepted too, provided they are at least 50% intact — something high street banks and post offices will typically refuse outright. The rate for old or damaged notes may be slightly lower than for current series, but we’ll always offer a fair price. If you also have leftover currency from neighbouring countries such as Kenyan Shillings or Ugandan Shillings, we can exchange those too.

Tanzanian Shilling Coins

We accept Tanzanian Shilling coins across all circulating denominations. Coins do attract a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to the additional handling involved, but we’re happy to take them when most other services won’t. If you’ve returned from a broader African trip with a mix of loose change — including coins from countries like South Africa — we can help with those as well.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take
  • We verify your currency and pay you within 5 working days
  • No hidden fees or charges

Tanzanian Shilling Exchange FAQ

Can I exchange Tanzanian Shillings back into British pounds in the UK?

Yes. Most UK high street banks and bureaux de change don’t handle Tanzanian Shillings, so finding a buyer for them can be tricky. We specialise in currencies like this — simply post your notes and coins to us, and we’ll pay you in British pounds within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal.

Do you accept old or withdrawn Tanzanian Shilling banknotes?

Yes, we do. Tanzania has issued several series of banknotes over the decades, and we accept older withdrawn designs alongside the current series, typically at a slightly reduced rate. As long as a note is at least 50% intact, we’ll consider it.

How do I send my Tanzanian Shillings to you, and when will I be paid?

You simply box up your Tanzanian Shillings and post them to us yourself — many customers returning from Tanzania or Zanzibar find it easiest to do this shortly after arriving home. Once we receive and verify your currency, we’ll pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If you’re not happy with our offer for any reason, we’ll return your currency free of charge.

Do you accept Tanzanian Shilling coins as well as banknotes?

Yes, we accept Tanzanian Shilling coins. The rate for coins is slightly lower than for banknotes because of the extra handling involved, but we’re happy to take them when most exchanges and banks won’t give you anything for loose change.

I have both Tanzanian Shillings and Kenyan Shillings left over from a trip — can you exchange both?

Yes! We can exchange both in the same transaction. You can find details for Kenyan Shillings on their own exchange page, and simply include both currencies in the same parcel when you post them to us.
