About Uzbekistani Som Exchange

The Uzbekistani Som (UZS) is the official currency of Uzbekistan, a landlocked Central Asian nation that has become an increasingly popular destination for travellers exploring the Silk Road. We accept all denominations of Uzbekistani Som banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Uzbekistani Som Banknotes

The current Som banknotes feature a range of denominations celebrating Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage, architecture, and natural landscapes. Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept the full range of circulating Som notes — if you’ve come home with a mix of denominations large and small, we’ll exchange them all. If you’re also holding currency from neighbouring Central Asian countries such as Azerbaijani Manat or Georgian Lari, we can help with those too.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Uzbekistan has issued several series of Som since the currency was introduced in 1994, and we accept older withdrawn notes that most UK banks and bureaux de change will simply turn away. Damaged notes are also considered, provided they remain at least 50% intact. The exchange rate on older or damaged notes is typically slightly lower than for current series, but you won’t be left out of pocket just because your notes have seen better days.

Uzbekistani Som Coins

Som coins, including the smaller tiyin denominations, are accepted as part of your exchange. Coins generally attract a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to the additional handling involved, but there’s no need to leave them in a drawer — send them in alongside your notes and we’ll exchange the lot.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take

Uzbekistani Som Exchange FAQ

Is the Uzbekistani Som difficult to exchange in the UK?

Yes, the Som is considered an exotic currency and most UK high street banks, post offices, and bureaux de change will not accept it. We specialise in currencies like this, so you can send us your leftover Som and we’ll convert them into sterling for you.

Do you accept old Som banknotes from earlier series?

Yes, we do. Uzbekistan has updated its banknotes several times since the Som was introduced in 1994, and we accept notes from earlier series that are no longer in circulation. The rate on withdrawn notes is slightly lower than for current banknotes, but you won’t be turned away just because your notes are an older design.

Can I exchange Uzbekistani Som coins as well as banknotes?

Yes! We accept Som coins, including the smaller tiyin denominations, which most exchange services won’t touch. Coins are exchanged at a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to handling costs, but it’s well worth including them with your notes rather than throwing them away.

How do I send my Uzbekistani Som and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your Som banknotes and coins and post them to us yourself — we recommend using a tracked service for your own peace of mind. Once we receive and verify your currency, we’ll process payment within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you’re not happy with the rate we offer, we’ll return your Som to you free of charge.

Can I exchange Som if the notes are torn or damaged?

Yes, in most cases. We apply a simple rule of thumb: as long as a note is at least 50% intact, we’ll consider it for exchange. The rate on damaged notes is slightly reduced, but unlike most exchanges we won’t reject them outright. If you’re unsure whether a particular note qualifies, feel free to contact us before sending.
