About Turkish Lira Exchange

The Turkish Lira (TRY) is the official currency of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. We accept all denominations of Turkish Lira banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Turkish Lira Banknotes

The current Turkish Lira series features a range of colourful, security-rich banknotes in denominations including the 200 Lira and the 100 Lira, alongside smaller denominations covering everyday use. All notes in this series incorporate modern security features such as watermarks, security threads, and holographic elements. We accept every denomination in the current series.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we also buy older Turkish Lira banknotes, including the earlier New Turkish Lira notes such as the 100 New Lira and the 50 New Lira issued in 2005. We also accept damaged or worn notes, provided they are at least 50% intact. Rates for old or damaged notes are slightly lower to reflect the additional handling involved. If you have pre-reform Turkish Old Lira notes from before the currency redenomination, we can exchange those too.

Turkish Lira Coins

We accept Turkish Lira coins, including the 1 Lira coin and smaller Kuruş denominations such as the 50 Kuruş and 25 Kuruş. Rates for coins are slightly lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling costs involved, but we’re happy to take them off your hands where most exchanges won’t.

Turkish Lira Exchange FAQ

Do you accept the old New Turkish Lira banknotes issued in 2005?

Yes, we do. The New Turkish Lira (YTL) was introduced in 2005 as part of a major redenomination that replaced the old Turkish Lira, and while these notes are no longer legal tender in Turkey, we’re happy to exchange them. You can find specific exchange pages for denominations such as the 100 New Lira and 5 New Lira on our site.

Can I exchange Turkish Lira coins as well as banknotes?

Yes! We accept Turkish Lira coins, including the 1 Lira coin and Kuruş denominations such as the 25 and 50 Kuruş pieces. Most banks and airport bureaux de change refuse coins altogether, so we’re one of the few places in the UK where you can convert them.

What happens to my Turkish Lira once I send it to you?

Simply box up your Turkish Lira and post it to us yourself — once we receive it, we’ll verify everything and pay you within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you’re not happy with our offer, we’ll return your currency free of charge.

Can I exchange Turkish Old Lira notes from before the 2005 redenomination?

Yes, we can exchange pre-redenomination Turkish Old Lira notes, which were replaced when Turkey removed six zeroes from the currency in 2005. These are no longer accepted by Turkish banks, so specialist exchange services like ours are one of the few options available to UK customers.

I have a damaged or torn Turkish Lira banknote — can I still exchange it?

Yes, we accept damaged Turkish Lira banknotes as long as they are at least 50% intact — unlike most high street exchanges, which will only take notes in pristine condition. The rate offered may be slightly lower than for undamaged notes, but you won’t simply be left with currency you can’t use. If you’re unsure whether your note qualifies, feel free to contact us before sending.
