British Pounds Banknotes & Coins We Accept

To exchange your British Pounds for cash, select the coins or banknotes you want to add to your account below.

About British Pounds Exchange

The British Pound Sterling (GBP) is the official currency of the United Kingdom and one of the world’s oldest and most widely recognised currencies. We accept all denominations of British pound banknotes and coins, including older series, pre-decimal coinage, and damaged notes.

Current British Pound Banknotes

The Bank of England currently issues polymer banknotes featuring the reigning monarch, with the latest King Charles III series covering all main denominations — including the £5£50, and everything in between. The Queen Elizabeth II polymer series, featuring figures such as Jane Austen and JMW Turner, remains legal tender and is equally welcome. We also accept many older withdrawn paper issues, including notes featuring figures such as Sir Edward Elgar and Sir John Houblon. We exchange all current Bank of England banknotes at competitive daily rates.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept a wide range of withdrawn British banknotes — from historic Treasury issues of the First World War era, such as the 1914 £1 Treasury note, to the large white pre-war banknotes including the £1,000 White Banknote and older shilling-denominated notes. Provided a note is at least 50% intact, we will assess it and offer a rate, though this may be slightly lower than our standard rate to reflect condition and rarity. Even damaged or faded notes are worth submitting — we assess each one individually.

British Pound Coins

We buy a broad range of British coins, from everyday circulation pieces such as the £1 coin and the £2 coin to the old round pound, pre-decimal coinage including shillings, sixpences, and farthings, and collector pieces such as commemorative crowns and the Gold Sovereign. Exchange rates for coins are slightly lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling involved, but we accept a wider variety than most services.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take
  • We verify your currency and pay you within 5 working days
  • No hidden fees or charges

British Pound Exchange FAQ

Do you buy withdrawn Bank of England notes, such as the old paper £20 or £50?

Yes, we buy a wide range of withdrawn Bank of England banknotes, including older paper issues featuring figures such as Sir Edward Elgar and Sir John Houblon. Rates for withdrawn notes are slightly lower than for current series, but we will always make you a fair offer. If you are unsure whether your note is accepted, feel free to contact us before sending.

Can I exchange pre-decimal British coins, such as shillings or sixpences?

Yes! We accept a broad range of pre-decimal British coinage, including pieces such as the shilling, sixpence, and farthing. Pre-decimal currency was replaced by decimalisation in 1971, so these coins are no longer accepted by UK banks or shops — but we are happy to assess and exchange them.

How do I send my British pounds to you and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your banknotes or coins securely and post them to us yourself using a method of your choice. Once we receive your currency, we will verify it and aim to pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If you are not happy with our offer for any reason, we will return your currency to you free of charge.

Do you accept the very old Bank of England white banknotes?

Yes, we do — these large, hand-signed white banknotes are among the most historically fascinating items we handle, and we have individual exchange pages for denominations including the £500 White Banknote and the £100 White Banknote, among others. Because these notes are rare and their value varies considerably, we assess each one individually and will offer you a personalised rate.

I have leftover British pounds from a holiday — can I exchange them for another currency through you?

We specialise in buying foreign currency from UK customers rather than selling it, so if you have returned home with unspent British pounds you won’t need abroad, we can convert them to cash for you. If you are looking to exchange other currencies you’ve brought back — such as Euros, American Dollars, or one of many other currencies we cover — you’ll find dedicated exchange pages across our site.
