About South African Rand Exchange
The South African Rand (ZAR) is the official currency of South Africa, one of the continent’s most visited destinations for UK travellers. We accept all denominations of Rand banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.
Current South African Rand Banknotes
Current South African Rand banknotes are issued by the South African Reserve Bank and feature the iconic “Big Five” wildlife on the reverse — lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and buffalo. The notes incorporate modern security features including colour-shifting ink and watermarks, and we accept the full range of denominations in circulation, from the lower-value notes right up to the highest.
Old Series & Damaged Notes
Unlike most high street exchanges, we also buy older withdrawn series of South African Rand banknotes, as well as notes that have been torn, faded, or otherwise damaged. As long as a note is at least 50% intact, we can typically make you an offer, though the rate applied will be slightly lower than for current series notes. If you have returned from South Africa — or perhaps Kenya or another African destination — and found a mix of old and new currency at the bottom of your bag, we are happy to handle it all.
South African Rand Coins
We accept South African Rand coins, including the smaller cent denominations and the higher-value Rand coins. A slightly lower rate applies to coins due to the additional handling involved, but unlike many bureaux de change, we do not simply turn them away.
