About Georgian Lari Exchange

The Georgian Lari (GEL) is the official currency of Georgia, a country situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. We accept all denominations of Georgian Lari banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Georgian Lari Banknotes

The current Georgian Lari banknotes were introduced from 2016 onwards and feature a range of denominations with modern security features including holograms, watermarks, and raised print. We accept all current notes, including the 100 GEL note and the 200 GEL note, as well as all smaller denominations in the current series.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we also accept older Georgian Lari banknotes that are no longer in circulation, such as the 50 GEL note first issued in 2004 and the 10 GEL note first issued in 2002. Damaged or worn notes are also considered, provided they remain at least 50% intact; the rate offered may be slightly lower to reflect condition and handling.

Georgian Lari Coins

Georgian Lari coins — known as Tetri in their smaller denominations — are accepted, though the rate is slightly lower than for banknotes due to the additional handling costs involved. If you have mixed leftover currency from the wider region, we also exchange currencies such as Azerbaijani Manat and Turkish Lira.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take

Georgian Lari Exchange FAQ

Are Georgian Lari still accepted if I have notes from an older series?

Yes, we accept older Georgian Lari banknotes even if they have been withdrawn from circulation. Notes such as those first issued in 2002 or 2004 are still exchangeable with us, though the rate may be marginally lower than for current series notes.

Do you accept Georgian Lari coins as well as banknotes?

Yes, we do accept Georgian Lari coins alongside banknotes. The Lari is subdivided into 100 Tetri, and coins are issued in both Tetri and full Lari denominations. Please be aware that the exchange rate for coins is slightly lower than for banknotes due to additional handling requirements.

What is the highest-value Georgian Lari note you accept?

We accept all Georgian Lari banknotes including the 200 GEL note, which is the highest denomination in the current series. Whether you have a single high-value note or a mixture of smaller denominations, we are happy to exchange them all.

How do I send my Georgian Lari to you and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your Georgian Lari banknotes and coins and post them to us yourself — many customers returning from a trip to Tbilisi or elsewhere in Georgia find this the most convenient option. Once we receive and verify your currency, payment is made within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If you are not happy with our offer for any reason, we will return your currency free of charge.

Can I exchange Georgian Lari at a UK bank or post office?

Most UK banks and high street exchanges do not handle Georgian Lari, as it is not a widely traded currency in the UK. We specialise in less common currencies like the Lari, so you can send yours to us rather than struggling to find a local exchange that will accept them. If you have any questions about your specific notes or coins, feel free to contact us before sending.
