1 Cent United States (Union Shield, Issued 2025)

The Lincoln cent with the Union Shield reverse was introduced in 2010 and continued the long-running one-cent series honouring Abraham Lincoln. It is struck on a copper-plated zinc planchet, giving it a bright copper appearance with a light feel, and has a plain, unmilled edge. It served as the smallest denomination of United States coinage for everyday small change.

On the obverse appears Victor David Brenner’s right-facing bust of Abraham Lincoln, first used in 1909. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” arches across the top, “LIBERTY” sits to the left of the portrait and the year “2025” to the right, with the designer’s initials “VDB” small at the base of the bust.

On the reverse, designed by Lyndall Bass, is a Union shield of thirteen vertical stripes beneath a horizontal bar, symbolising the states united into one nation. A banner across the shield reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, a scroll over the lower part carries “ONE CENT”, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves around the top. The engraver’s initials “LB” and “JFH” appear at the lower left and right.
