1 Dollar US Dollar (Issued 2017)

During the presidency of Donald Trump, whose administration took office in January 2017, the United States Federal Reserve issued this Series 2017 one dollar note as part of the long-running small-size format established since 1928. The note carries the signature of Steven T. Mnuchin, who served as Secretary of the Treasury under that administration, alongside the signature of Jacob J. Lew as Treasurer of the United States. Printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Series 2017 one dollar note continues a design tradition that has remained largely unchanged for decades, making it one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of currency in circulation worldwide.

On the front, the note is dominated by the engraved portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, rendered in precise intaglio engraving at the centre of the note against a finely detailed oval vignette frame. Washington’s likeness is depicted in his characteristic powdered hair and formal attire, the engraving capturing subtle tonal gradations across his face and clothing through the characteristic raised-ink technique of intaglio printing. The overall colour scheme of the front is predominantly green and black on white paper stock, consistent with the traditional appearance of United States Federal Reserve Notes. The header at the top of the note reads “FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE” in capitalised serif lettering, while the bold inscription “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches prominently above the portrait. Below the portrait, the denomination is stated in full as “ONE DOLLAR” in large, bold lettering. To the left of the portrait sits the Federal Reserve district seal, a circular emblem bearing the letter “F” at its centre, identifying this note as issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, district six, with the numeral “6” appearing both to the left and right of the portrait in multiple positions. The serial number F 35382815 A is printed in green ink and appears twice — once in the lower left and once in the upper right of the face — alongside the green Treasury seal to the right of the portrait, which features a set of scales, a key, and a pointed chevron pattern. The text “WASHINGTON, D.C.” appears beneath the Treasury seal. A legal tender clause reading “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE” is printed in small text within the left portion of the note. The series designation “SERIES 2017” is clearly printed to the lower right of the portrait, accompanied by the facsimile signatures of Jacob J. Lew as Treasurer and Steven T. Mnuchin as Secretary of the Treasury. Decorative guilloché scrollwork and fine geometric lathe-work borders frame the entire design, with the numeral “1” appearing in each of the four corners.

The reverse of the note is printed in green ink on white paper and presents a richly engraved, symmetrical design centred on the large bold word “ONE” rendered in ornate, shadowed numerals occupying the central field of the note. Above this, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is printed in clear, capitalised text. The heading “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” spans the top of the note. To the left, the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States is depicted as an unfinished pyramid of thirteen courses of stone, surmounted by an eye within a radiant triangle — the Eye of Providence — enclosed within an elaborate circular border bearing the Latin inscriptions “ANNUIT COEPTIS” above and “NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM” on a scroll below, with the Roman numeral MDCCLXXVI at the pyramid’s base. To the right, the obverse of the Great Seal shows the American bald eagle displayed frontally, holding a ribbon in its beak inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, with a shield on its breast, an olive branch in its right talon, and a bundle of thirteen arrows in its left talon, all beneath a glory of thirteen stars. Fine guilloché lathe-work borders surround both seals and the central panel, and the denomination “ONE” appears in the corners, with “ONE DOLLAR” lettered along the bottom in bold serif type.
