1 Dollar US Dollar (Issued 2021)

Few banknotes in global circulation carry the cultural and historical weight of the United States one dollar bill, a design whose fundamental iconography has remained largely unchanged since the introduction of the small-size Federal Reserve Note format in 1928. A currency expert examining this 2021 series example would immediately recognise the extraordinary continuity of its engraved portrait and reverse symbolism, unchanged across nearly a century of American monetary history. The note’s deep intaglio printing, a hallmark of Bureau of Engraving and Printing craftsmanship, gives the portrait and lettering a tactile raised quality entirely distinguishable from lesser printing methods. The 2021 series designation, confirmed by the signatures of the serving Treasury officials, places this note firmly within the modern era of Federal Reserve issuance.

On the front, the central focus is a finely engraved portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, rendered in high-relief intaglio within an oval frame against a lightly cross-hatched background. Washington’s portrait is positioned centrally, his gaze directed slightly to his left, his expression composed and formal, with his name printed in small capital letters below the frame. The background of the note is printed in pale green and cream tones, overlaid with fine guilloché latticework that covers the entire field. To the upper centre, the text “FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE” is printed in bold serif capitals, with “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” in large prominent lettering immediately below. The legal tender declaration — “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE” — appears in small print to the upper left of the portrait. The denomination “ONE DOLLAR” is printed in bold capitals along the lower border, with the numeral “1” appearing in each of the four corners. To the left of the portrait sits a dark green circular Federal Reserve Bank seal bearing the letter “B”, identifying this note as issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, flanked by the number “2” printed at each of its cardinal positions. The serial number B 46023023 A is printed in green ink to the upper left and lower right of the portrait. To the right of Washington’s portrait is a green circular treasury seal, partially obscured by an overprint of the numeral “1” in large gothic-style type. “WASHINGTON, D.C.” appears above the treasury seal. The series date “2021” is printed to the lower right alongside two facsimile signatures: that of the Treasurer of the United States, Lynn Malerba, printed to the lower left of the portrait, and the Secretary of the Treasury, Janet L. Yellen, to the lower right.

The reverse is printed entirely in green ink — the colour that gave the dollar its enduring nickname “greenback” — and is dominated by a large ornate word “ONE” rendered in shadowed, dimensional serif lettering at the centre of the note. Flanking this central word are two iconic symbols of the United States. To the left is the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States, depicting an unfinished thirteen-step pyramid surmounted by a triangular Eye of Providence radiating light, enclosed within a circular band bearing the Latin inscriptions “ANNUIT COEPTIS” above and “NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM” below, with the Roman numeral MDCCLXXVI at the pyramid’s base. To the right is the obverse of the Great Seal, featuring a bald eagle displayed with wings spread, holding a bundle of thirteen arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right, with a shield of thirteen red and white stripes across its breast and a glory of thirteen stars above its head. The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” appears on a banner in the eagle’s beak, though rendered at small scale within the engraving. Above the central “ONE” device, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is printed in bold capitals. “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is inscribed along the top border, and “ONE DOLLAR” appears along the lower border. The numeral “1” is printed in each corner of the reverse. The entire field is filled with intricate guilloché scrollwork and fine geometric lathe-work patterns, demonstrating the exceptional anti-counterfeiting craftsmanship associated with Bureau of Engraving and Printing production.
