The Susan B. Anthony dollar was introduced in 1979 as a smaller, more practical dollar coin to replace the large Eisenhower dollar. Struck in a copper-nickel clad composition, it has a silvery colour and a light feel, with a distinctive eleven-sided inner border set inside a round, reeded-edge coin. It honoured the pioneering American suffragist Susan B. Anthony.

On the obverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, appears the right-facing portrait of Susan B. Anthony. “LIBERTY” arches across the top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” sits to the right, the year “1981” is at the foot, and thirteen stars surround the design within the polygonal border.

On the reverse, also by Gasparro, is an eagle landing on the Moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission insignia, clutching an olive branch. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves around the top with “E·PLURIBUS·UNUM” above the eagle, “ONE DOLLAR” is inscribed along the bottom, and a ring of small stars frames the scene.
