100 Dollars US Dollar (Issued 2021)

The United States dollar remains the world’s dominant reserve currency, underpinning vast flows of global trade in goods ranging from technology and pharmaceuticals to agricultural commodities and financial services. The one hundred dollar denomination is the highest value note in everyday American circulation, routinely used in international commerce, tourism, and cross-border transactions. Hundreds of millions of these notes circulate outside the United States at any given time, making them among the most recognised pieces of paper currency on earth. The 2021 series continues the security-enhanced design first introduced in 2013, carrying forward features developed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to deter counterfeiting on a global scale.

On the front, the note is dominated by a large, finely engraved portrait of Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, statesman, diplomat, and polymath, whose name appears in small capital lettering directly beneath the portrait. The engraving captures Franklin’s characteristic long hair, his composed expression, and the subtle texture of his period coat, rendered with the deep intaglio relief characteristic of Federal Reserve Note production. The portrait is positioned slightly to the right of centre, set against a pale background of intricate guilloché patterning. To the left of the portrait sits a green Federal Reserve seal bearing the words “FEDERAL RESERVE” in an arc, accompanied by the Federal Reserve district letter and number designation — in this case “C3” and the serial number QC 02836101 A printed in blue ink, with a second instance of the serial number appearing to the right in matching blue. The words “FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE” appear in small type at the upper left, whilst “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is printed prominently in bold serif lettering across the upper centre and right. The denomination “100” appears in large bold numerals in the lower left corner and again, in a large copper-toned numeral, at the lower right, this latter figure incorporating colour-shifting ink that transitions between copper and green when tilted. The note carries two printed signatures below the portrait: that of Janet L. Yellen as Secretary of the Treasury and Lynn Malerba as Treasurer of the United States. A prominent blue 3-D security ribbon runs vertically through the note, embedded within the paper itself rather than printed upon it, and when tilted reveals shifting images of bells and the numeral 100. To the right of the portrait, a faint watermark portrait of Franklin is visible when held to the light. The text “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE” appears in small print at the right centre, alongside a reproduction of a quill pen and an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence. A copper-toned Liberty Bell image is printed within an orange inkwell graphic, which itself is part of the colour-shift security element. The series date “SERIES 2021” appears in small type near the lower right, and the note’s paper incorporates embedded red and blue security fibres throughout.

The reverse is printed in a rich olive-green and black palette dominated by a highly detailed intaglio engraving of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the building where both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were adopted. The engraving shows the full façade of the building, complete with its central clock tower, arched windows, flanking wings, surrounding trees, and a small statue visible in the forecourt. The label “INDEPENDENCE HALL” appears in fine serif lettering beneath the central image. At the upper centre of the reverse, the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is printed in bold, widely spaced lettering. The words “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arc across the very top of the note in capital letters, and “ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS” is printed along the lower edge. The denomination “100” appears in the upper left corner in standard green ink, whilst on the right side a very large “100” is printed in bold copper and orange tones, matching the colour-shift element visible on the front and providing an immediate visual denomination indicator. Rows of small yellow numeral “100” microprinting are arranged in the background field to the upper left of the central vignette, adding a further layer of security and visual texture to the otherwise restrained reverse design.
