2 Dollars US Dollar (Issued 2013)

Fewer Americans encounter a two-dollar bill in everyday circulation than almost any other denomination in United States currency history, and a significant proportion of those printed are immediately set aside by the public upon receipt, meaning vast numbers never re-enter active commerce. Estimates suggest that while hundreds of millions of two-dollar notes have been issued since the modern small-size format was introduced in 1928, a disproportionately large share is hoarded rather than spent, creating an unusual paradox in which a current-issue note feels genuinely elusive. The 2013 series carries this same mystique, produced in relatively modest quantities compared to other Federal Reserve denominations and seldom encountered in British pockets or holiday currency wallets. Historians and currency enthusiasts alike prize the two-dollar bill for its unbroken continuity of design and its status as the United States’ least-circulated standard denomination.

On the front, the central feature is an engraved portrait of Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, rendered in the fine intaglio style characteristic of Bureau of Engraving and Printing production. Jefferson faces slightly to his right, depicted in his characteristic late-eighteenth-century dress with a high collar and cravat, his expression composed and authoritative. The portrait is framed by an oval vignette and sits against a pale background, with the word “JEFFERSON” printed beneath it in small capital letters. The overall colour palette of the front is a combination of pale green, black intaglio ink, and bright green for the Federal Reserve seal and serial number. To the left of the portrait, a large, dark intaglio numeral “2” anchors the design, while the words “TWO DOLLARS” appear in bold serif lettering across the bottom of the note. The text “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” runs along the upper portion of the face, and “FEDERAL RESERVE NOTE” appears in smaller lettering immediately below. The issuing district is identified by the letter “F” within a circular Federal Reserve Bank seal printed in green, indicating the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, accompanied by the district number “6” repeated at each corner of the note. The serial number F10400401A is printed twice in green ink, once in the lower left and once in the upper right. The green Treasury seal is printed to the right of the portrait, overlapping the large numeral “TWO” printed in green in that area of the note. Two facsimile signatures appear below the portrait: that of the Treasurer of the United States to the left and the Secretary of the Treasury to the right, both printed in black. The series date “SERIES 2013” appears in small text adjacent to the Secretary’s signature. The legal tender obligation is stated in small text to the upper left: “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE.” The border of the note features fine guilloche scrollwork and geometric latticework in the intaglio tradition, framing the design on all four sides with characteristic precision. The location “WASHINGTON, D.C.” is printed in the upper right field.

The reverse of the note is printed entirely in green ink and features a large, highly detailed engraving based on John Trumbull’s celebrated painting depicting the presentation of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress on 4th July 1776. The scene, captioned at the lower centre with the words “DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, 1776,” shows a crowded assembly hall filled with the Founding Fathers of the United States, with a central group of five delegates — including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin — presenting the drafted document to John Hancock, President of the Congress, who is seated at an elevated desk to the right of the composition. The remaining delegates are arranged in a broad arc around the chamber, some seated and some standing, all rendered in fine engraved line work that captures period dress, furniture, and architectural detail with considerable fidelity. The denomination numeral “2” appears in the upper left and upper right corners of the reverse. The words “TWO DOLLARS” are printed in the lower left and lower right corners, while “TWO” appears vertically along the left and right margins in large outlined lettering. “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is printed in bold serif capitals along the upper border of the reverse design. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is printed in small capitals at the lower centre of the note, just above the Declaration caption. The entire reverse design is executed without colour transition, remaining uniformly in the distinctive green associated with United States Federal Reserve Notes, with no additional security overprinting visible on the reverse face.
