The Washington quarter was introduced in 1932 to mark the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth and became the enduring design for the American quarter dollar. Early issues such as this were struck in 90% silver, giving a bright white lustre, a solid feel and a finely reeded edge. It circulated as one of the most widely used American coins.

On the obverse, designed by John Flanagan, appears the left-facing bust of George Washington. “LIBERTY” arches across the top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” sits at the lower left, and the year “1941” is at the foot below the portrait.

On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings perches on a bundle of arrows, with two olive branches beneath it. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves across the top with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” just below it, and the denomination “QUARTER DOLLAR” runs along the bottom.
