5 Cents United States (Jefferson Nickel, Issued 1941)

The Jefferson nickel was introduced in 1938, replacing the Buffalo nickel, and honours Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Struck in a copper-nickel alloy, it has a silvery colour, a firm feel and a plain edge. It became the standard American five-cent coin and has remained in production ever since.

On the obverse, designed by Felix Schlag, appears the left-facing bust of Thomas Jefferson. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” curves down the left side, while “LIBERTY” and the year, separated by a star, run down the right as “LIBERTY ★ 1941”.

On the reverse is Monticello, Jefferson’s neoclassical Virginia home, shown frontally with its domed portico. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” arches across the top, the building is labelled “MONTICELLO” beneath it, “FIVE CENTS” appears below that, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves along the bottom. A mint mark “S” to the right of the building indicates the San Francisco Mint.
