The Buffalo nickel, also called the Indian Head nickel, was struck from 1913 to 1938 and is one of the most recognisable of all American coins. Made of a copper-nickel alloy, it has a silvery-grey tone, a solid feel and a plain edge. Its bold, sculptural designs drew on distinctly American subjects and it circulated widely as the everyday five-cent piece.

On the obverse, designed by James Earle Fraser, is the right-facing profile of a Native American, a composite portrait based on several sitters. The word “LIBERTY” appears to the upper right along the rim, and the date “1936” is placed on the raised ground below the neck.

On the reverse stands an American bison in profile on a mound. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves across the top with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” to the upper right, and the denomination “FIVE CENTS” runs along the bottom. A mint mark “S” beneath “FIVE CENTS” indicates the San Francisco Mint.
