50 Cents United States (John F. Kennedy, Issued 1964)

The Kennedy half dollar was introduced in 1964 as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy following his assassination, and was struck that first year in 90% silver. It has a bright white appearance, a substantial feel and a finely reeded edge. Heavily saved by the public as a keepsake, it saw only limited everyday circulation.

On the obverse, designed by Gilroy Roberts, appears the left-facing bust of John F. Kennedy. “LIBERTY” arches across the top, broken by the head, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” runs across the middle below the neck, and the year “1964” is at the foot.

On the reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro, is the Presidential Seal: a heraldic eagle bearing a striped shield, holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, with a ring of stars and rays around it. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves across the top and “HALF DOLLAR” along the bottom.
