The Franklin half dollar was struck from 1948 to 1963, honouring the American statesman and founding father Benjamin Franklin. Made of 90% silver, it has a bright white lustre, a substantial feel and a finely reeded edge. It served as the standard American fifty-cent coin until it was replaced by the Kennedy half dollar.

On the obverse, designed by John R. Sinnock, appears the right-facing bust of Benjamin Franklin. “LIBERTY” arches across the top, the year “1954” sits to the right of the bust, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” runs along the bottom.
