United States Liberty Head V Nickel (Issued 1897)

The Liberty Head nickel, popularly known as the V nickel for the large Roman numeral on its reverse, was struck from 1883 to 1913. Made of a copper-nickel alloy, it has a silvery-grey tone, a firm feel and a plain edge. It served as the everyday American five-cent coin for three decades.

On the obverse, designed by Charles E. Barber, appears the left-facing head of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY” and a wreath of cotton and grain in her hair. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait and the year “1897” is at the foot, all within a beaded border.

On the reverse, a large Roman numeral “V” denoting five sits at the centre within a wreath of cotton, wheat and corn. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” curves around the top with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” just below it, and the word “CENTS” runs along the bottom.
