United States Peace Silver Dollar
The Peace dollar was struck from 1921 to 1935 to commemorate the return of peace after the First World War, replacing the long-running Morgan dollar. Designed by the sculptor Anthony de Francisci, it is a large silver dollar of ninety per cent silver weighing 26.73 grams and measuring around 38mm across, with a reeded edge. Its bold, modern styling made it one of the most admired of all United States circulating coins.
On the obverse, the coin shows the head of Liberty facing left, her hair swept back beneath a radiate crown of rays evoking the Statue of Liberty, with the word “LIBERTY” around the top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRVST” across the field using the classical V for U, and the date below.
On the reverse, a bald eagle perches on a mountain crag clutching an olive branch, gazing toward the rays of a rising sun, with the legends “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above, “ONE DOLLAR” to the left, and the word “PEACE” inscribed on the rock beneath the eagle.
