US 10 Dollar Banknote (Red Seal) First Issued 1914

United States dollar banknotes have been produced in several historic forms by the U.S. Treasury, including this distinctive US $10 Red Seal banknote first issued in 1914. Unlike Blue Seal Federal Reserve Notes, this issue is a United States Note (Legal Tender Note) and represents Treasury-issued paper money that circulated alongside early Federal Reserve currency.

This $10 banknote is printed mainly in black and green ink on light-coloured paper and is immediately identifiable by its red Treasury seal and red serial numbers. These red features clearly distinguish it from Federal Reserve Notes of the same period. United States Notes were obligations of the U.S. Treasury and were legal tender for all debts.

On the obverse of the banknote is a finely engraved portrait of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. The portrait is centred within an oval frame and surrounded by detailed ornamental scrollwork. The wording “The United States of America” appears across the top, with “Ten Dollars” engraved prominently along the lower centre. To the right of the portrait sits the red Treasury seal, with matching red serial numbers and the series year of 1914 clearly shown.

The reverse of the note features a detailed engraved scene symbolising the development of the American economy. On the left, farmers work the land using horse-drawn agricultural equipment, while the right side depicts factories, rail wagons and industrial buildings. This contrast between agriculture and industry reflects the rapid economic expansion of the United States in the early twentieth century. The denomination “Ten Dollars” appears at the centre, framed by ornate engraved borders and large corner numerals.

This series is notable for its bold colouring, high-quality engraving and historical significance, setting United States Notes apart from contemporary Federal Reserve designs. Although no longer issued for circulation, these notes remain recognised as withdrawn historic US currency.
