US $1000 Dollar Banknote (Grover Cleveland) Issued 1934

United States dollar banknotes have been issued in a wide range of denominations and series by the Federal Reserve, including this US $1000 banknote featuring Grover Cleveland, issued in 1934. This exceptionally high-value note was produced for institutional and interbank use rather than everyday circulation and represents one of the most historically significant banknotes ever issued by the United States.
The $1000 banknote is printed primarily in black and green ink on light-coloured paper and forms part of the 1934 Federal Reserve Note series. At the time of issue, notes of this denomination were used largely for large financial settlements and transfers between banks. Although it remains legal tender under US law, the $1000 denomination was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1969 and is no longer accepted by most banks or retailers worldwide.
On the obverse of the banknote is an engraved portrait of Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. Cleveland’s portrait is set within a detailed oval frame and surrounded by intricate guilloché patterns and ornamental borders. The wording “The United States of America” appears prominently across the top, with the denomination “One Thousand Dollars” clearly displayed along the lower portion of the note. Green serial numbers, a green Treasury seal, and a Federal Reserve district seal are also present, consistent with the design standards of the era.
The reverse of the banknote features a bold and highly decorative layout with large engraved denomination numerals and elaborate scrollwork. The design emphasises both the value and authority of the note, reflecting its intended use in high-level financial transactions rather than public circulation.
This $1000 series is particularly notable for its rarity, historical importance, and museum-grade craftsmanship. While these banknotes are still recognised as legal tender in the United States, they are no longer issued, are classed as withdrawn from circulation, and are generally treated as legacy or collector items outside the US banking system.

If you are looking to exchange high-value US dollar banknotes, we provide a secure and specialist UK service for withdrawn and legacy United States currency. Many banks will not accept large-denomination US notes, particularly those issued prior to modern security enhancements, but we regularly handle historic and discontinued US banknotes for individuals, charities, and businesses.
Due to the age, rarity, and high value of $1000 banknotes, additional authentication checks are required. This means processing times may be longer than standard notes, and acceptance is always subject to successful verification.
For all high-value transactions, we will require valid identification in order to comply with Anti-Money Laundering Regulations (AMLR).
