US $20 Dollar Banknote (Andrew Jackson) Issued 2001

United States dollar banknotes have been issued in a wide range of designs and series by the Federal Reserve, including this US $20 banknote featuring Andrew Jackson, issued in 2001. This note belongs to the final generation of traditional “small-head” US banknotes produced before the introduction of the redesigned, colour-enhanced $20 notes later in the decade.
The $20 banknote is printed primarily in black and green ink on light-coloured paper and includes security features typical of the era, such as a green Treasury seal, green serial numbers, and a Federal Reserve district seal identifying the issuing bank. While this series remains legal tender in the United States, it is no longer printed and is increasingly treated as a legacy or withdrawn design outside the US, particularly by banks and exchange providers.
On the obverse of the banknote is an engraved portrait of Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States. Jackson’s portrait is centrally positioned within an oval frame and surrounded by intricate guilloché patterns and ornamental borders. The wording “The United States of America” appears prominently across the top, with the denomination “Twenty Dollars” clearly shown along the lower portion of the note.
The reverse of the banknote features a detailed engraving of the White House, the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. The building is depicted in fine architectural detail, framed by decorative scrollwork and large denomination numerals, reflecting the traditional engraving style used on US banknotes throughout much of the twentieth century.
This 2001 $20 series is notable for representing the end of a long-running design tradition, produced shortly before the introduction of enhanced security features such as colour-shifting ink, watermarks, and enlarged portraits. As a result, it is commonly classed as an older or legacy US banknote when presented for exchange in the UK.
