The 2006 $5 banknote is printed primarily in black and green ink on light-coloured paper and incorporates enhanced security features compared with earlier issues. These include subtle background colours, improved microprinting, and advanced engraving techniques designed to reduce counterfeiting while maintaining the traditional appearance of US currency.

On the obverse of the banknote is a detailed engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.
