100.000 Australes Peso (Issued 1991)

The Banco Central de la República Argentina, established in 1935 as the nation’s central monetary authority, was responsible for issuing this 100,000 Australes note during one of the most turbulent periods in Argentine financial history. By 1991, hyperinflation had driven denominations to extraordinary levels, and the Austral currency — introduced in 1985 to replace the Peso — was itself on the verge of replacement by the Peso Convertible under the Convertibility Plan of that same year. The bank’s mandate to maintain monetary stability makes this note a direct document of that institutional struggle against runaway inflation. That the Banco Central continued to produce formally engraved, carefully designed currency even at this extreme denomination reflects the enduring standards of Argentina’s central banking tradition.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of José Evaristo Uriburu, the Argentine statesman and President of the Republic from 1895 to 1898, whose name appears in small printed text directly above the portrait to the left: “JOSE EVARISTO URIBURU.” The portrait is rendered in a warm reddish-brown intaglio engraving, showing Uriburu facing slightly to the left, depicted with a full beard, moustache, and formal dark jacket with a white collar visible beneath. The portrait is set within a circular guilloché frame composed of fine interlocking floral and rosette patterns. To the left of the note, printed vertically in deep reddish-brown, is the issuing authority’s full name: “BANCO CENTRAL DE LA REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA.” The denomination “100000” appears in numerals at the upper centre of the note, whilst to the right, in large bold numerals, “100,000” is printed prominently, accompanied by the text “Cien Mil Australes” in a flowing script directly beneath, rendered in a warm golden-brown tone. To the upper right, a decorative panel contains a light blue and green globe or world map vignette set within geometric patterning. Two signatures appear to the left of centre, identifying the Presidente and Gerente General of the Banco Central, with their respective titles printed below in small text. The serial number “35.038.713 B” appears twice — once at lower left and once at upper right — printed in dark reddish-brown numerals. The overall colour palette of the front is a warm combination of reddish-brown, gold, and cream, with the background filled by intricate guilloché lacework patterns providing both aesthetic depth and security.

The reverse presents a richly detailed allegorical composition centred on a classical female figure, rendered in intaglio engraving, who is seated and robed in flowing drapery in the manner of a personification of the Republic or of Progress. She raises her right arm, in which she holds a laurel wreath or olive branch aloft, whilst her left arm rests beside her. At her feet and to her side are decorative elements including what appears to be a cornucopia or a shield motif, lending the composition a strongly neoclassical character. This central allegorical figure is set within an elaborate sunburst guilloché pattern of concentric radiating lines in warm golden-yellow and olive tones, forming a striking oval mandala that dominates the centre of the note. To the upper left of the reverse, a circular green emblem featuring a globe or sun motif with radiating lines is visible. To the upper right, a smaller circular security emblem or seal appears in similar tones. The denomination “100,000” appears in large bold numerals across the upper portion of the reverse, and “Cien Mil Australes” is repeated along the lower portion in the same flowing script seen on the front. The text “REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA” runs vertically along the right-hand margin. The lower register of the reverse features a band of geometric diamond and zigzag patterning in dark brown, providing a strong base border to the composition. The colour scheme of the reverse is predominantly warm golden-yellow, olive green, and reddish-brown, with the guilloché work creating considerable tonal variation across the surface.
