5.000 Chachos Peso (Issued 2024)
Issued in 2024 under the government of La Rioja province, Argentina, the 5.000 Chachos note emerged during a period of acute economic turbulence in the country, when several Argentine provinces resorted to issuing quasi-currencies — known as bonos or provincial bonds — to manage local fiscal shortfalls and pay public-sector wages amid a severe national currency crisis. La Rioja’s “Chacho” bond, authorised under Ley 10.703, takes its name from the legendary caudillo leader Ángel Vicente Peñaloza, affectionately known as “El Chacho,” a defining figure in the province’s political and cultural identity. The note is designated “al portador” — payable to the bearer — functioning as a debt-cancellation instrument rather than a nationally issued banknote. It was signed by Ricardo Quintela, then-Governor of La Rioja.
On the front, the dominant visual element is a large, dramatic engraved portrait of Ángel Vicente Peñaloza — “El Chacho” — depicted as a commanding, bearded figure in period dress, holding an elongated lance or spear and wearing a broad-brimmed hat, rendered with substantial sculptural depth in grey-green engraved tones against a pale green background. The denomination “5.000” appears in bold, dark teal block numerals in the upper left, beneath which “CHACHOS” is printed in equally prominent lettering, followed by the inscription “BONO DE CANCELACIÓN DE DEUDA” in smaller capitals. The text “AL PORTADOR LEY 10.703” confirms its legal basis. A serial number, 0002S965, appears vertically along the left edge in orange, repeated horizontally in the upper right corner in dark teal. A QR code is printed in the lower left quadrant, accompanied by a small orange outline map of La Rioja province and the official “LA RIOJA GOBIERNO” issuing authority mark. A facsimile signature of Ricardo Quintela sits centrally on the left half of the note. The background is composed of fine guilloché wave patterns in light green, lending the note a degree of anti-counterfeiting complexity, and the series designation “SERIE A” appears in the lower right corner.
The reverse presents a beautifully engraved central vignette of an Andean condor in mid-flight, its wings spread wide as it soars over a mountainous landscape, rendered in dark grey-green intaglio-style engraving with impressive naturalistic detail — the feathers of the wings, the white collar, and the rocky terrain below are all clearly articulated. This image occupies the central and left portion of the note and is set against an intricate pale green guilloché background of layered wave and rosette patterns that sweep across the full width of the note. To the upper right, the denomination “5.000 CHACHOS” is repeated with the subsidiary text “AL PORTADOR LEY 10.703” and the serial number 0002S965 printed vertically along the right edge in orange. The map of La Rioja province reappears in orange outline on the far right. The “SERIE A” designation is printed in the lower right area. A circular watermark-style ghost image is faintly visible in the left portion of the note within the guilloché field. The lower border features a repeating scalloped or wave-like pattern in green that adds further visual structure to the design.
