1 Australian Pound (1913 – 1918 Arms Series)

£0.690304

1 AUP = £0.690304

The 1 Australian Pound banknote of the 1913–1918 Arms Series represents one of the earliest nationally issued Commonwealth banknotes following Australia’s federation. Produced by the Australian Note Printing Branch, this series marked a decisive move away from colonial bank issues toward a unified national currency. The design blends formal heraldic symbolism with finely engraved industrial imagery, reflecting both authority and economic development in the early 20th century.

On the front of the banknote, the title Commonwealth of Australia – Australian Note appears prominently across the upper section. Beneath it, the legal tender statement confirms the Treasurer’s promise to pay the bearer one pound in gold coin on demand at the Seat of Government. At the centre sits the Australian Coat of Arms, framed by dense guilloché security patterns. Serial numbers are printed in red at the top, and the denomination One Pound is repeated within decorative side panels for clarity. The layered green and blue background tinting adds depth while serving as a deterrent against reproduction.

The reverse features a detailed engraved mining scene within a central framed vignette. Workers operate drilling equipment in a rugged landscape, symbolising Australia’s industrial growth and resource development during the period. The scene is enclosed within ornate geometric borders and repeating scrollwork, with the denomination “£1” prominently displayed at both ends. The strong blue palette enhances contrast and engraving precision, typical of early Commonwealth security printing.

As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 1 Australian Pound (1913–1918 Arms Series) is no longer accepted by banks or high-street exchange bureaux and is typically found in inherited collections, archival paperwork, or historic savings.
