1 Australian Pound (1953 – 1960 Series)

£0.690304

1 AUP = £0.690304

The 1 Australian Pound banknote issued between 1953 and 1960 represents the first Commonwealth series to feature Queen Elizabeth II, marking a new era in Australian currency following the death of King George VI. Printed by the Note Printing Branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this issue reflects a post-war design style that retained traditional engraving techniques while introducing refined portraiture and enhanced security detailing.

On the front of the banknote appears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II at the right-hand side, framed by intricate foliage and scrollwork. The inscription Commonwealth of Australia runs along the lower margin, while the denomination One Pound is prominently displayed at the centre. The Australian Coat of Arms appears above the denomination, and serial numbers are printed in matching positions across the upper field. Ornate corner panels display “£1” devices, and the surrounding guilloché patterns provide both decorative structure and protection against counterfeiting.

The reverse presents a symmetrical design featuring medallion portraits of prominent historical figures associated with early exploration and colonial development. These engraved profiles are framed by laurel wreath motifs and structured within an elaborate border that balances the composition across the full width of the note. The green monochrome colour palette enhances engraving depth while maintaining the formal appearance characteristic of pre-decimal Commonwealth currency.

As a withdrawn pre-decimal denomination, the 1 Australian Pound (1953–1960) ceased to circulate following Australia’s decimalisation in 1966 and is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux. These notes are commonly discovered in inherited collections, estate documents, or historic savings.
