10 Australian Pounds (1913 – 1918 Arms Series)

The 10 Australian Pounds banknote of the 1913–1918 Arms Series is part of the first nationally issued Commonwealth paper money following Australia’s federation. Printed by the Australian Note Printing Branch, this denomination represented a substantial sum at the time and was commonly used in larger commercial transactions. The design combines strong national symbolism with finely detailed engraving typical of early twentieth-century security printing.
On the front of the banknote, the heading The Commonwealth of Australia appears prominently above the formal promise that the Treasurer will pay the bearer ten pounds in gold coin on demand. The Australian Coat of Arms is positioned centrally along the lower section, while serial numbers appear in matching positions across the upper field. Decorative corner panels each contain the denomination “10”, helping quick identification in circulation. The background is filled with layered geometric guilloché patterns in blended green and blue tones, providing both ornament and protection against counterfeiting.
The reverse presents a wide pastoral transport scene showing teams of horses pulling loaded wagons across a rural landscape. The engraving captures depth through tonal shading and fine linework, framed within an ornate arch bordered by repeating geometric motifs. The denomination Ten Pounds is repeated along the edges and within decorative panels, reinforcing the value visually across the design.
As a withdrawn historic issue, the 10 Australian Pounds (1913–1918 Arms Series) is no longer exchangeable through banks or standard currency bureaux and is typically encountered in collections, estate paperwork, or archival holdings.
