10 Australian Pounds (1913 – 1918 Arms Series)

The 10 Australian Pounds banknote from the 1913–1918 Arms Series is one of the earliest high-denomination Commonwealth issues following Australia’s Federation. Produced by the Australian Note Printing Branch, this series established a nationally unified currency system, replacing colonial bank issues with federally authorised notes. As a significant denomination at the time, the £10 note was typically used in commercial, agricultural, and institutional transactions rather than everyday retail spending.
On the front of the banknote, the heading The Commonwealth of Australia – Australian Note is prominently displayed across the upper field. The Treasurer’s legal tender promise confirms payment of ten pounds in gold coin on demand at the Seat of Government. The Australian Coat of Arms appears centrally, surrounded by intricate guilloché patterning and layered geometric security designs. Serial numbers are printed in red at the top, and the denomination “10” is repeated within decorative corner panels. The engraving incorporates subtle colour transitions across green and blue tones, enhancing both depth and anti-counterfeit protection.
The reverse features a detailed, engraved pastoral scene framed within an ornate oval panel. A convoy of horse-drawn wagons loaded with agricultural produce travels across a rural landscape, symbolising Australia’s farming economy and export strength in the early twentieth century. Decorative star motifs and repeating borders surround the central vignette, while “Ten Pounds” is clearly displayed within structured corner panels to reinforce denomination clarity.
As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 10 Australian Pounds (1913–1918 Arms Series) is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux and is most often encountered in inherited collections, archival holdings, or historic financial records.
