The 10 Australian Pounds banknote issued between 1923 and 1927 is an early Commonwealth Bank of Australia high-denomination note from the interwar period. Printed in a rich monochrome engraved style, the design reflects the formal aesthetic of early Commonwealth currency — highly decorative borders, elaborate typography, and narrative agricultural imagery intended to communicate economic strength and national identity.
On the front of the banknote, the title The Commonwealth of Australia appears prominently across the upper centre. The denomination is repeated multiple times within ornate corner panels and a large decorative cartouche containing the value “10” at the bottom centre. A portrait of King George V appears at the right within a circular medallion, while a sailing ship vignette sits at the left, symbolising maritime trade and international commerce. The central panel contains the legal tender statement printed in formal script along with official signatures. Intricate guilloché patterns fill the background, and serial numbers are printed clearly along the top margin.
The reverse presents a detailed pastoral transport scene showing workers guiding a long line of pack animals and wagons through a rural landscape. The composition emphasises agricultural production and inland transport, themes commonly used in early Australian banknote design. The engraving uses fine tonal shading to create depth, enclosed within an elaborate arched frame surrounded by floral and geometric ornamentation. The denomination “10 TEN POUNDS” appears repeatedly within decorative panels at each corner.
