10 Australian Pounds (1953 – 1960 Series)

£6.903044

1 AUP = £0.690304

The 10 Australian Pounds banknote issued between 1953 and 1960 belongs to the first Commonwealth series produced during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Printed by the Note Printing Branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this denomination represented a substantial value in pre-decimal currency and was commonly used in larger financial transactions prior to decimalisation in 1966. The design reflects the refined engraving style of the 1950s, combining formal portraiture with allegorical and industrial symbolism.

On the front of the banknote appears a portrait of Matthew Flinders, the British navigator and cartographer credited with charting much of Australia’s coastline. His engraved profile is set within an oval frame at the left, while the title Commonwealth of Australia runs prominently across the upper centre. The denomination Ten Pounds is printed boldly across the middle, and £10 devices appear in each corner for immediate recognition. The Australian Coat of Arms is positioned centrally above the denomination, and serial numbers are printed in matching locations across the upper field. Fine guilloché patterns fill the background, reinforcing both aesthetic balance and security.

The reverse features an allegorical composition centred on themes of justice, industry, and national progress. A seated classical female figure appears at the right, while symbolic devices such as scales and mechanical elements are integrated into the central design. The engraving uses layered red-brown tones to create depth and texture, framed by ornate scrollwork and decorative panels that repeat the denomination.

As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 10 Australian Pounds (1953–1960) ceased to circulate after the introduction of the Australian dollar in 1966 and is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux. These notes are often discovered in inherited collections, estate documents, or historic financial holdings.
