10 Australian Shillings (1913 – 1918 Arms Series) Half Sovereign

The 10 Australian Shillings banknote of the 1913–1918 Arms Series, commonly referred to as the “Half Sovereign,” represents one of the earliest Commonwealth issues following Federation. Equal to half a pound, this denomination carried significant everyday purchasing power during the First World War period and formed part of Australia’s newly unified national currency system.
On the front of the note, the heading The Commonwealth of Australia – Australian Note is prominently displayed across the upper section. The Treasurer’s legal tender promise confirms payment of ten shillings in gold coin on demand at the Seat of Government. The Australian Coat of Arms appears within an oval frame at the left, while serial numbers are printed in red. Decorative side panels display the denomination “Ten Shillings,” and intricate guilloché patterning fills the background, forming a dense security lattice characteristic of early twentieth-century note production.
The reverse features a finely engraved central vignette of a large dam structure with water flowing across the spillway, framed within an ornate oval panel. Surrounding scrollwork and repeating border motifs emphasise symmetry and balance. The denomination is repeated in multiple positions, including “Ten Shillings” and numeric devices at each end, reinforcing clarity and anti-forgery design. The green and blue tonal layering enhances engraving depth and texture.
As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 10 Australian Shillings (1913–1918 Arms Series) Half Sovereign is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux and is typically found in historic collections, estates, or inherited archives.
