The 10 Australian Shillings banknote issued between 1913 and 1924 forms part of Australia’s early “Australian Note” series introduced after Federation. Equal to half a pound and often referred to as a Half Sovereign in paper form, this denomination circulated widely during the First World War era and into the early 1920s. The design reflects the Commonwealth’s assertion of national authority over currency, replacing earlier private and colonial bank issues with federally guaranteed notes.
On the front of the note, the heading The Commonwealth of Australia – Australian Note is prominently displayed. The Treasurer’s legal tender promise confirms payment of ten shillings in gold coin on demand at the Commonwealth Treasury at the Seat of Government. The Australian Coat of Arms is positioned within an oval panel at the left, while serial numbers are printed in red across the upper field. The denomination “Ten Shillings” appears clearly within structured panels, and intricate guilloché security patterns fill the background with tightly interwoven line work to deter counterfeiting.
The reverse features a detailed engraved vignette of a large dam structure spanning a river, with water cascading across the spillway and a solitary figure observing from below. The scene symbolises infrastructure development and national progress in the early twentieth century. Ornate scrollwork frames the central image, and the denomination is repeated at each end within decorative geometric panels. The layered blue-green palette enhances depth and engraving precision.
As a long-withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 10 Australian Shillings (1913–1924) is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux and is typically found in historic collections, inherited estates, or archival holdings.
