10 Australian Shillings (1933 – 1939 Series)

£0.350338

1 AUP = £0.700676

The 10 Australian Shillings banknote issued between 1933 and 1939 belongs to Australia’s interwar pre-decimal currency series printed by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This issue reflects the mature engraved style of the period, combining strong ornamental borders, formal lettering, and allegorical industrial imagery typical of Commonwealth banknotes of the 1930s.

On the front of the banknote appears a portrait of King George V at the right-hand side within a decorative oval frame. The inscription Commonwealth of Australia runs across the upper centre, with the legal tender promise printed clearly beneath. The denomination “10/-” and Ten Shillings are repeated in multiple panels for clarity in circulation. Serial numbers are printed prominently across the centre, and a large watermark panel occupies the left side. The surrounding background consists of dense guilloché patterns designed to deter counterfeiting and provide visual structure.

The reverse presents a manufacturing vignette showing workers engaged in industrial production, representing economic activity and craftsmanship. The figures and machinery are rendered in precise engraved linework within a framed panel labelled Manufacture. Decorative patterned borders surround the scene, and the denomination appears again in stylised panels at each side. The brown monochrome palette highlights engraving depth and fine detail.

As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 10 Australian Shillings (1933–1939) is no longer accepted by banks or standard exchange bureaux and is often discovered in inherited collections or historic paperwork.
