100 Australian Pounds (1913 – 1918 Arms Series)

£69.030435

1 AUP = £0.690304

The 100 Australian Pounds banknote of the 1913–1918 Arms Series stands among the highest denominations ever issued in early Commonwealth currency. Introduced shortly after Federation, this series symbolised Australia’s transition from colonial banking systems to a unified, federally controlled monetary framework. With an extremely high face value for its time, the £100 note was primarily intended for major commercial settlements, interbank transfers, and government-level transactions rather than everyday retail use.

On the front of the banknote, the heading The Commonwealth of Australia – Australian Note is prominently displayed across the upper centre. Beneath it, the Treasurer’s legal tender promise confirms payment of one hundred pounds in gold coin on demand at the Commonwealth Treasury at the Seat of Government. The Australian Coat of Arms appears within a shield panel to the left, while the denomination “100” is repeated in bold decorative corner frames. Serial numbers are printed in red at the top. Intricate guilloché patterns and layered geometric backgrounds form a dense security network characteristic of early twentieth-century note production.

The reverse features two finely engraved oval vignettes depicting dramatic waterfall landscapes set within rugged natural surroundings. These scenic compositions symbolise Australia’s natural beauty and untamed environment during the nation’s formative years. The twin-panel arrangement is framed by ornate scrollwork and symmetrical border elements, with the denomination “100” repeated at each corner for clarity. The blue-green tonal palette enhances engraving depth and visual contrast.

As a long-withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 100 Australian Pounds (1913–1918 Arms Series) is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux and is most often found in historic collections, estate holdings, or institutional archives.
