5 Australian Pounds (1933 – 1939 Series)

The 5 Australian Pounds banknote issued between 1933 and 1939 forms part of Australia’s interwar pre-decimal currency system produced by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. This series reflects a mature development of earlier Commonwealth designs, retaining traditional engraving techniques while refining clarity and symmetry. The note combines formal portraiture, heraldic symbolism, and labour-themed imagery within a detailed monochrome framework typical of British Commonwealth banknotes of the era.
On the front of the banknote appears a portrait of King George V at the left within an ornate oval frame, engraved with fine shading to emphasise facial features and uniform detail. On the right sits the Australian Coat of Arms enclosed within a matching decorative medallion, balancing the composition. The title Commonwealth of Australia runs prominently across the upper centre, while the legal tender promise is written in flowing script across the middle. Serial numbers appear in matching positions on both sides of the central watermark window, and the denomination “FIVE POUNDS” is printed clearly across the lower section. The surrounding background is filled with dense guilloché patterning designed both for ornament and anti-counterfeit protection.
The reverse features an industrial labour scene showing workers moving cargo barrels and materials, symbolising trade and economic productivity. The vignette is rendered in precise engraved linework and framed within geometric panels. The denomination “£5” appears centrally above a patterned panel containing the word FIVE, while the remainder of the design is enclosed by repeating border patterns that mirror the structure of the front.
