5 Australian Pounds (1953 – 1960 Series)

The 5 Australian Pounds banknote issued between 1953 and 1960 forms part of the first full pre-decimal series produced during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Printed by the Note Printing Branch of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this issue reflects the refined post-war design approach of the 1950s, combining traditional engraved portraiture with detailed agricultural symbolism. As a higher denomination, it was widely used in larger commercial and personal transactions prior to Australia’s decimalisation in 1966.
On the front of the banknote, the heading Commonwealth of Australia runs prominently across the upper centre. The denomination Five Pounds appears boldly across the middle, framed by intricate guilloché patterning. At the right is a portrait of Sir John Franklin, the Arctic explorer and former Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), engraved in fine detail within an oval frame. The Australian Coat of Arms appears at the left within a structured panel, and serial numbers are printed in matching positions across the upper field. The background is filled with layered geometric patterns designed to enhance durability and deter counterfeiting.
The reverse presents a strong agricultural composition featuring livestock and rural produce, including cattle, sheep, and crops arranged symmetrically around a central emblem. The engraving highlights Australia’s agricultural wealth and export economy during the mid-20th century. The blue monochrome palette emphasises depth and tonal contrast, while the denomination £5 is repeated in each corner for clarity.
As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 5 Australian Pounds (1953–1960) ceased to circulate following decimalisation in 1966 and is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux. These notes are frequently found in inherited collections, estate documents, or long-held savings.
