The 5 Australian Shillings banknote issued between 1913 and 1924 forms part of Australia’s earliest Commonwealth “Australian Note” series following Federation. This denomination, equivalent to a quarter of a pound, was widely used in everyday transactions during the First World War period and the early 1920s. Printed with advanced security engraving for its time, the note reflects the newly unified national identity of Australia and the shift away from colonial-era banking systems.
On the front of the banknote appears a left-facing portrait of King George V, framed within an ornate circular panel. The heading Australian Note runs prominently across the top, while the Treasurer’s legal tender promise confirms payment of five shillings to the bearer. The Australian Coat of Arms is incorporated within the design, and serial numbers are printed in red. Fine guilloché patterning fills the background, creating a dense lattice of interwoven lines designed to deter counterfeiting. The denomination “5” and the words Five Shillings are clearly displayed in structured panels.
The reverse is dominated by a complex geometric security pattern with the words Five Shillings set boldly at the centre. The intricate symmetrical engraving features repeating line work, scroll motifs, and layered textures that give the note both visual depth and practical anti-forgery protection. The green monochrome palette enhances clarity and emphasises the precision of early twentieth-century printing techniques.
As a withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 5 Australian Shillings (1913–1924) is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux and is often discovered in family collections, estate paperwork, or historic financial holdings.
