50 Australian Pounds (1913 – 1918 Arms Series)

£34.515218

1 AUP = £0.690304

The 50 Australian Pounds banknote of the 1913–1918 Arms Series is one of the highest-value denominations issued during the formative years of Commonwealth-controlled currency. Introduced shortly after Federation, this series established Australia’s authority over national banknote production. As a substantial denomination at the time, the £50 note was primarily used for major commercial settlements, banking transfers, and institutional transactions rather than everyday circulation.

On the front of the banknote, the heading The Commonwealth of Australia – Australian Note is prominently displayed. The Treasurer’s legal tender promise confirms payment of fifty pounds in gold coin on demand at the Commonwealth Treasury at the Seat of Government. The Australian Coat of Arms appears centrally above the denomination, with serial numbers printed in red across the upper field. The word Fifty Pounds is clearly displayed across the centre, while the numeral “50” is repeated in ornate corner panels. Fine guilloché patterns and layered geometric backgrounds create a dense security structure characteristic of early twentieth-century note engraving.

The reverse features a detailed pastoral vignette depicting a vast flock of sheep across open countryside, symbolising Australia’s wool industry and agricultural economy during the period. The scene is framed by elaborate scrollwork and star motifs, with the denomination “50” repeated at each side. The blue monochrome palette enhances engraving precision and reinforces the note’s formal symmetry.

As a long-withdrawn pre-decimal issue, the 50 Australian Pounds (1913–1918 Arms Series) is no longer accepted by banks or exchange bureaux and is typically encountered in historic collections, estate holdings, or archival financial records.
