Australian Half Penny (Issued 1934)

The half penny was one of the smallest coins in Australia’s pre-decimal system, in which twelve pence made a shilling and twenty shillings made a pound. Struck in bronze, it carried a warm reddish-brown tone and a modest weight suited to constant everyday handling in shops and markets. The 1934 issue circulated under the Commonwealth of Australia while the country still used the imperial pounds, shillings and pence arrangement inherited from Britain. Its edge is plain and unmilled.

On the obverse, the coin bears the crowned bust of King George V facing left, surrounded by the Latin legend “GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:”, naming him King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith and Emperor of India. A ring of fine beading frames the portrait inside the raised rim.

On the reverse, the words “ONE HALF PENNY” are set across three lines within a beaded inner circle, with “COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA” curving around the upper edge and the date “1934” at the foot. The design is plain and legible, with no additional emblem.
