Australian Threepence Coin (George VI, Wheat Ears)

The threepence was the smallest silver coin of the Australian pound, worth a quarter of a shilling. This George VI type was struck in silver with a milled edge and carries a sheaf of wheat on its reverse. Compact and thin, the threepence remained in circulation until Australia switched to decimal currency in 1966.

On the obverse, the coin carries the bare-headed portrait of King George VI facing left, with the legend “GEORGIVS VI D·G·BR·OMN·REX·F·D·IND·IMP” around a beaded border.

On the reverse, designed by George Kruger Gray, are three ears of wheat bound together at the base. The word “AUSTRALIA” arches above with the split date to either side, and “THREE PENCE” runs along the foot, framed by a beaded border.
