The two-groschen coin was a minor denomination of the Austrian schilling, struck in aluminium and circulating until the schilling gave way to the euro in 2002. It is a very light, pale coin with a plain edge, among the smallest everyday pieces of the pre-euro coinage.
On the obverse, the coin shows the single-headed Austrian eagle of the Republic, wings spread, with the legend “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” around it and the year of striking.
On the reverse, a large numeral 2 above the word “GROSCHEN” states the value plainly within a simple field, framed by a plain raised rim. Being a republican coin, it carries no portrait.
