The five schilling coin was a familiar piece of everyday Austrian money before the country adopted the euro in 2002. This later type was struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge and a bright silvery finish, replacing the earlier silver five schilling. On the obverse is a horseman of the Spanish Riding School — a rider in formal dress mounted on a Lipizzaner stallion performing a classical dressage movement. The legend “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH”, the Republic of Austria, curves around the design.

On the reverse the large numeral “5” sits above the Austrian shield, its barred and vertical fields shown in heraldic detail, with the word “SCHILLING” arched above, the split date to either side and two laurel branches curving up from the foot.
