1/2 Dinar Bahraini Dinar (Issued 1973)

Withdrawn from circulation following a series of modernisation updates to Bahrain’s currency programme, this half dinar note was issued under the authority of the Bahrain Monetary Agency pursuant to Law No. 23 of 1973. The note was later reissued in 1993 with a narrow security thread as an updated security measure, distinguishing it from earlier printings of the same design. As Bahrain’s currency framework evolved and new series were introduced with enhanced security features, this issue was eventually retired and demonetised, rendering it no longer valid for use in everyday transactions. Those still holding examples in the United Kingdom can present them for exchange through specialist withdrawn currency services.

On the front, the note is printed predominantly in shades of rose pink, soft red, and warm brown, with intricate guilloché patterning forming decorative borders around the central design field. To the left of centre, a pale outline map of Bahrain is set within a framed panel surrounded by elaborate geometric lacework in deeper crimson tones. At the centre of the note sits the coat of arms of Bahrain — a red and white shield bearing the traditional serrated dividing line, enclosed within an ornate cartouche rendered in fine intaglio engraving. To the right of centre, a detailed vignette depicts a craftsman working at a traditional weaving loom, shown in close detail with visible timber frame construction, capturing the heritage of Bahraini artisanal craft. The Arabic denomination “نصف دينار” (Half Dinar) appears in bold, prominent calligraphic script across the centre of the note, accompanied by further Arabic text at the top identifying the issuing authority and the legislative basis of the note. The serial number — rendered in red and appearing twice, once vertically along the left margin and once horizontally near the lower right — reads بع154126. A signature line appears in Arabic script near the bottom, attributed to the Governor of the Bahrain Monetary Agency. Small decorative corner motifs in dark maroon and stylised floral elements in the right margin complete the front design, while the narrow embedded security thread is visible as a thin dark vertical line within the paper substrate, serving as the key identifying feature of this 1993 revision.

The reverse of the note continues the rose, brown, and muted purple colour scheme, with the header “BAHRAIN MONETARY AGENCY” printed in clear serif capitals across the top of a dark brown bordered panel, flanked on both sides by the fraction denomination “½”. The central and dominant feature of the reverse is a finely engraved bird’s-eye perspective illustration of a large modern complex of buildings, likely representing a significant public or governmental facility in Bahrain, depicted with considerable architectural detail including long colonnaded structures, surrounding lower buildings, open courtyards, and organised access roads. The engraving is executed with fine line-work that conveys depth and shadow across the building facades. To the right of this central vignette, an ornate rectangular panel features an intricate multi-layered geometric pattern in deep maroon and purple tones, incorporating repeating diamond and lattice motifs with a lighter, possibly watermark-visible square at its centre. A stylised torch or palm-flower motif appears on the upper left of the reverse, echoing decorative elements seen on the front. In the lower right corner, the denomination “HALF DINAR” is printed in clean brown serif typeface within a bordered panel. A repeating guilloche border of interlocking circular patterns runs along the bottom edge, and further floral geometric patterning is visible in the lower right quadrant, rendered in soft lilac and pink tones.
