The Barbadian twenty-five cent coin dates from 1973, when Barbados introduced its own decimal currency, the Barbados dollar of one hundred cents. Struck in copper-nickel with a silvery-white colour, it was a workhorse denomination for everyday shopping and change. The coin has a round flan with a reeded edge that makes it easy to distinguish by touch.

On the obverse, the coin carries the full coat of arms of Barbados: a shield with a bearded fig tree between two ‘Pride of Barbados’ flowers, supported by a dolphin and a pelican, with a crest of an arm holding two crossed pieces of sugar cane above. The motto “PRIDE AND INDUSTRY” runs on a scroll below, “BARBADOS” curves around the foot and the date “19 73” is split to either side within a beaded border.

On the reverse stands the historic Morgan Lewis sugar windmill, a Barbadian landmark, shown with its sails and outbuildings on a rise. The value “TWENTY FIVE CENTS” arches around the upper edge and the designer’s initials “PN” appear at the foot, framed by a beaded rim.
