The twenty-franc coin was one of the higher circulating denominations of the Belgian franc, struck in a golden nickel-bronze and in use until Belgium adopted the euro in 2002. It is a warm-coloured coin with a plain edge, solid and easy to recognise.
On the obverse, the coin carries the portrait of King Albert II of the Belgians facing left, with his name “ALBERT II” inscribed below. Albert II reigned from 1993, so coins of this date bear his effigy rather than that of his predecessor Baudouin.
On the reverse, a large numeral 20 dominates the field above the word “FRANCS”, with the country name “BELGIQUE” (the coin was also struck in a Dutch-language variant reading “BELGIË”) and the year of striking.
