500 Francs / Frank Belgian Franc (Issued 1952-1958)

The 500 Belgian Francs banknote ceased to be legal tender following Belgium’s adoption of the Euro on 1 January 2002, when the Belgian Franc was permanently withdrawn from circulation. This denomination, issued between 1952 and 1958, represents a final chapter in Belgium’s independent monetary history before the nation joined the European single currency system. Collectors and holders of these notes from the post-war era now seek specialist currency exchange services to realise their value, as traditional banking channels no longer process Belgian Franc notes.

On the front of the note, a finely engraved portrait dominates the left side, depicting a bearded male figure rendered in grey and sepia tones with meticulous hatching that captures the depth and texture of the subject’s facial features. The centre of the note displays “BANQUE NATIONALE DE BELGIQUE” in serif typography across the upper portion, with “CINQ CENTS FRANCS” prominently positioned in the middle in large capital letters, the word “FRANCS” appearing beneath “CINQ CENTS”. The denomination “500” appears in the top right corner in bold numerals, with a smaller decorative 500 oval cartouche positioned in the lower right. The serial number “1254.J.366” is visible in the upper right margin, whilst “0313333386” appears on the left margin below the portrait. Ornamental guilloché patterning in blue tones flanks the central text, creating decorative security elements. The date “28.07.53” and inscriptions “LE TRESORIER” and “LE GOUVERNEUR” appear in the lower central area, alongside additional authorisation signatures and text in small print.

The reverse features a carefully rendered classical or allegorical scene depicting four male figures in muted earth tones of brown, olive and cream. The composition shows figures of varying ages arranged in a group study, with the leftmost figure shown in profile and others facing forward or at angles, creating depth and narrative complexity within the engraved design. The denomination “500” appears in the top left corner in blue-grey serif type. Ornamental border panels frame the scene on both the left and right edges, each containing vertical text reading “BANQUE NATIONALE DE BELGIQUE” in mirror orientation. The lower left corner bears what appears to be an official signature or mark. The overall colour palette shifts from warmer tones on the front to cooler, more subdued hues on the reverse, reflecting the classical subject matter and the engraving techniques employed throughout the note’s production.
